There’s a bit of whimsy at play with this effective memorial, a row of shoes along the Danube on the Pest side of the city.

The shoes can be discovered in the shadow of Hungary’s impressive Parliament Building and, at first glance, appear a trifle, a bit of public art to amuse tourists and other folks on a stroll along the river’s promenade.

But the memorial’s artist, award-winning sculptor Gyula Pauler, captures a dark moment in Hungary’s background and makes a effective statement with his straightforward design. The story he builds about is heartbreaking.

In the closing days of the Second Globe War, members of the Arrow Cross Party, the Nazis of Hungary, rounded up Jews and marched them to the Danube. They stripped them of their clothes and had them step out of their shoes on the embankment, where they were shot and tossed into the river. Sixty pairs of iron shoes now dot the web site exactly where the Jews were murdered, a silent prayer for the dead.

This came as a complete surprise – I have only just discovered that on June 24th, 2008, Forced to get rid of shoes appeared in the Explored section – No. 455 out of 500 for the day (even although I have several other folks that rank greater in Flickr’s dubious interestingness calculation).
Okay, its a start…..

    That’s one of the wonderful things about Photoshop. A little time, patience, and imagination are all you need to open unlimited doors. I am by no means good with Photoshop. I am in total awe of those who are!

    You could use a Holga instead of Photoshop and get a similar effect without all the post-processing…

    True true, but that would take all the fun out of it! I enjoy messing around with PS as much as I like taking pictures. Plus, the couple minutes it took to post process pale in comparison to taking film in to get it developed… even if you do it yourself it’s time consuming!
